Hi Dear,

I’m reading an interesting book now (on problem solving) that begins with a clever parable:
Two friends are having a picnic by the river. Suddenly they hear a drowning child shouting for help.
Both friends jump in the water, grab the child and swim to shore. But seconds later, they hear another child cry for help.
And just as they rescue him, they see another child drowning. . . and another . . . and another. They try their damndest to rescue them all, when suddenly – one friend gets an idea.
He gets out of the river and yells to his buddy:
“Be right back – I’m going upstream to stop whoever is throwing all these kids in the water!”
Lol.
The point is:
It’s much wiser to learn how to stop problems from happening than to endlessly react to them.
And so it is in the music industry.
Most musicians build their careers by reacting to the same problems over and over again.
Problems like:
– Their fans not buying their music, despite the musicians putting their heart and soul into writing and recording it...
– Low turnout at their gigs...
– Fewer (and lower profile) gigs
– Low and unstable income
Very few people take action to design their careers in ways where problems like these rarely come up.
Well, believe it or not:
You can have a steady schedule of gigs that grow your (band’s) reputation in your local area.
You can have a system for getting an excellent turnout at most gigs you play. (Sure, everyone can have an off night here and there, but – when you build your career the right way – disappointing gigs become few and far between instead of the norm.)
You can design a process for growing your fanbase and building a relationship with their fans to make them so loyal – they eagerly buy your music (instead of downloading it for free).
And you can grow your income year after year, until you are earning a very lucrative living that’s far more stable than most people with a day job have.
Part of what I try to do in these blog is help you realize that:
It’s not that hard to build a career like that 👆when you know what to do, how to do it and actually do it.
